What is the role of a school governor?

teach-first_6

Governing bodies make decisions about:

  • • Setting the school’s aims and policies.
  • • Raising standards of achievement.
  • • Making sure money is spent wisely.
  • • Appointing staff.
  • • Improving the school environment.
  • • Making sure all pupils receive rights to all education opportunities.

Governors also:

  • • Report to parents about their work
  • • Support school activities
  • • Visit the school on behalf of the governing body
  • • Promote their school in the community

What is the time commitment?

The general time commitment is in the region of attendance to at least two meetings per term: one governing body meeting and one committee meeting. Beyond this is up to you.

Pablo Casasbuenas ‘04’ a Teach First Ambassador who also volunteers as a school governor says:

“It is about targeting your efforts and making the time you do put in worthwhile. There are usually dozens of sub-committees, special roles, tasks to volunteer for. The great thing about being a governor is that there is a lot of flexibility in what you do and don’t sign up for.”

Where should I volunteer?

Volunteer in the community where you live or work, or in or near to your Teach First placement school.
